Construction is underway on the first project in the Utah Trail Network following a groundbreaking event in Moab this week. UDOT Executive Director Carlos Braceras joined Gov. Spencer Cox and other federal and local partners to mark the start of the statewide effort to connect communities with a system of paved trails.

This is the first of more than 20 Utah Trail Network projects currently in development statewide. It includes a 0.7-mile connection along State Route 128 that closes a long-standing break in the Colorado River Trail and will enhance walking and biking access between destinations in Moab. In addition to improving safety, the project will help reduce vehicle traffic and expand transportation options for residents and visitors.

“This project connects people to places,” Carlos said. “It makes it easier to move between trails, campgrounds and destinations in Moab without getting on the highway. It’s a great example of how the Utah Trail Network will work across the state.”

The Utah Trail Network Master Plan includes 2,600 miles of new paved trails and 500 miles of existing trails, focused on building regional connections, linking existing pathways and closing key gaps.
