2034 Olympics Transportation Working Group Meets

For those who were here in 2002, you remember the electric atmosphere and the monumental effort it took to move the world, and look good doing it. And whether you were here in 2002 or not, we have the chance to do it again in the 2034 Winter Olympics. 

On January 7, the 2034 Olympics Transportation Working Group, chaired by our own Executive Director Carlos Braceras, met at the State Capitol. While the excitement is real, it’s important to note that the title “working group” is accurate–this team of partners is coordinating to determine shared priorities, not making decisions about projects or funding. No projects are being selected or fast-tracked today, and as Carlos has said many times, “We won’t build projects for a two-week event. We’ll build the right projects – ones that are already planned because they will benefit Utahns long after the closing ceremonies.”

The January meeting highlighted talented UDOT employees Tiffany Pocock, Director of Program Development, and Corey Unger, GIS Program Manager. Tiffany is UDOT’s point of contact for members of the working group, responsible for gathering data and input from our partners so the team can take a high-level look at current plans and anticipated needs. Corey Unger showed why UDOT is known for our innovation and skill, demonstrating tools that he and our GIS Team built for the working group and upcoming Milan Winter Olympics. Suffice it to say, the working group was impressed.

We are starting from a position of incredible strength because we’ve hosted before: we already have the needed infrastructure, and we understand what’s expected of us. At the same time, things have changed a lot since 2002! So we’re setting ourselves up for success by planning early and collaborating with our partners. Let’s get ready to show the world, once again, why Utah is so special and UDOT is the best DOT in the country!
