Making the Most of a Mild Winter in Region One

Last week, parts of the state saw the first major snowfall of the new year, which shifted some of our crews' focus squarely to plowing the roads, which is usual this time of year, but the unexpectedly mild start to winter provided valuable and unique opportunities to work on regular maintenance duties that are typically reserved for the summer months.
"With the nicer weather, it gives us an opportunity to do the stuff that we weren't able to get to throughout the summer," says Kendall Hatch, Supervisor from UDOT’s Ogden shed.
Just a few weeks ago, crews from the Ogden and Clearfield sheds took advantage of the warmer temperatures to do some crack sealing along I-15 in Ogden, which is quite unusual this time of year.
With the chance to get his hands dirty, Nic Naylor from the communications team was invited to join the crew while they did some crack sealing for the latest episode of UDOiT.
Crack sealing is a vital part of road maintenance and a proactive measure against winter damage.
Regardless of the weather, our maintenance crews are out daily, ensuring infrastructure remains safe and functional. Their year-round duties include everything from fixing signs and clearing spills to prepping roads for winter conditions.
Even as the primary focus returns to snow removal, UDOT’s commitment to Keeping Utah Moving remains constant. They may have wished for more snow earlier, but they efficiently utilized the extra time to complete vital projects. Rain, snow, or shine, the crews are out there making sure roads are ready to go, ensuring our roads are in the best possible condition on the road ahead.
