Safety Spotlight - Lacerations and Gloves
Safety isn’t just a good workplace practice, it’s a way of life. We’re pleased to introduce the Safety Spotlight, a series dedicated to providing you with the tips and tricks you need to keep you, your team, and your loved ones safe wherever you are.
Nearly 20% of UDOT workplace injury claims have to do with lacerations, with 62% of those injuries happening to hands or fingers. These injuries don’t just happen at the workplace, they’re a leading cause of emergency room visits for home injuries as well. Any activity involving hands and sharp objects—from cutting vegetables in the kitchen to using a box cutter in the shop—heightens the risk of a laceration-related injury.
The best protection against lacerations is by wearing cut-resistant gloves. Not only do they reduce the risk of cuts to hands and fingers by up to 70%, but they are provided as part of UDOT’s PPE policy free of charge to the employee. Talk to your supervisor to discuss purchasing cut-resistant gloves through one of UDOT's approved vendors.
