UDOT’s Research & Innovation Division invites you to join them on Monday, March 23, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. for a summary of their recent research on Effectiveness of Wildlife Fencing. 

Wildlife-vehicle crashes pose serious safety risks and contribute significantly to wildlife mortality. Wildlife fencing is a proven countermeasure. This research evaluated the safety effectiveness of wildlife fencing installed in Utah from 2011 to 2023 using traffic volume, herd size, migration patterns, and urban/rural context as explanatory variables. Results indicate that wildlife fencing provides a 75% reduction in crashes and 85% reduction in fatal/serious injury crashes. Economic analysis yielded a benefit-cost ratio of approximately 2.0 for wildlife fencing installation.
